Prepare today for summer storms
Summer weather can be brutal. Almost everyone needs to prepare for the possibility of flooding, as even dry, desert areas can get summer storms that the ground just can't handle. Remember, just an inch of water can cause tens of thousands of dollars' worth of damage.
Late spring and summer can also bring tornados to your area. Did you know tornados are more common in the U.S. than in any other country? No matter where you live, take some time today to make a tornado plan.
Identify a Safe Room
When a tornado strikes, there’s often very little time to react. A windowless area on the lowest floor in your home or business designed to withstand high winds and flying debris can help keep yourself and others safe during the storm.
Know the Warning Signs
If you see any of these signs, it could indicate a tornado is forming:
-
Dark, greenish sky
-
Large hail
-
Large, dark, low-lying cloud (particularly if rotating)
-
Loud roar, similar to a freight train
Seek Shelter
Find the safest place possible, wherever you may be. Put as many walls and ceilings between yourself and the tornado as you can. If you’re not near a building, get into your car, buckle a seatbelt, and cover your head with your arms.
Have a bag prepared
Take the time to put together a bag of some clothes, food, medicine, first aid kits, etc. Then you can take that with you if you need to leave your home or be prepared if the power goes out after a storm.
Tornados move quickly and with little to no warning. Please take these steps to prepare your home, your family and your property for potential summer storms.
