Hurricane Season is in Full Swing, Are You Prepared?
We’re now over a month into hurricane season — while the named storms haven’t been severe yet, it won’t be too much longer until we all start tracking them. Before the wind and the rain start hammering your home, there are a few steps you can – and should – take to prepare.
- Check flood coverage. Did you add flood coverage to your homeowner insurance? If not, you need to do that as soon as possible as most policies take 30 days to go into effect. Your homeowner insurance most likely doesn’t include flood coverage unless you added it.
- Inventory your property. While you’re checking on flood coverage, double-check that your homeowner insurance coverage is accurate and adequate.
- Prepare your property. Take some time before the storms come to trim weak branches, secure gravel or rocks, and put away outside furniture when you aren’t using it so it doesn’t blow around.
- Know where you are going. Make an evacuation plan now. Know your flood zone, research your evacuation route, and figure out which shelter may be able to host you. Pets aren’t always welcome at all shelters, so make sure you have a backup plan for your pets.
