Helpful Tips to Keep Your Email Safe
- Use different usernames and passwords.
- Use strong passwords.
- Use extreme caution when opening emails claiming to be from any company you know may have been breached. Don't provide personal, account, or financial information if it's requested in an email. Question unknown and unfamiliar parts of received emails.
- Never open an email spam, attachment or other emails from suspicious or unknown sources. They may contain viruses or other programs that will make your computer vulnerable to intrusion. Remember, even pictures, music and videos can contain malicious programs.
- Never click on a link in an email claiming to come from a financial institution or business, and never provide personal or account data in response. The email may be a fake sent by “phishing“ scammers.
- Review the spam filters in your anti-virus program or Internet email provider. Make sure that you are maximizing its potential to quarantine malicious spear-phishing emails.
- Nothing personal, please. Never store sensitive information in email.
- Don’t go wireless in public. Avoid public wireless networks.
- Back up your contacts. If you’re locked out, you’ll still have them. •Add numeric codes after answers to security questions. For example, if your answer to the security question about your hometown is Los Angeles, then make the answer “Los Angeles 5932.”
- If you don’t want the entire world to see it, don’t text or email it. Period.
